Permits and certificates

Renovations - Construction - Installation of Wood Stoves and Fireplaces

Installation

In dwellings, building regulations prohibit the installation of an appliance that burns solid fuel, except for a pellet appliance that is certified either by the EPA or in accordance with CAN/CSA-B415.1.

Clearance and floor protection

Information on the clearance required around the appliance and on floor protection is specified by the manufacturer.

Chimney and flue

A combustion appliance must be connected to a masonry chimney, in accordance with the building bylaw, or to a prefabricated 650ºC metal chimney that meets standard ULC S629.

The flue of a wood-heating chimney may be made of clay, concrete, refractory bricks or stainless steel.

If you plan on using an existing chimney, you must first have it checked by a chimney sweep or professional inspector who will verify whether its materials, construction, size and condition correspond to the intended use. Make sure to get a written report.

The chimney connector

The chimney connector must be no more than 3 m (10') long, may contain no more than two 90º elbows and must be kept at least 45 cm (18”) from any combustible material.

Wood storage

The Borough’s urban planning regulations do not permit heating wood to be stored in the front yard. Woodpiles in other yards may not be more than 2 m (6' 7”) high.

Care in chimney sweeping

The owner has the responsibility of choosing the chimney sweep. In case of doubt, refer to the website (in French) of the Association des professionnels du chauffage (APC).

Procedure

A certificate may be obtained at the:

Direction de l'aménagement urbain et des services aux entreprises

Office Hours
Information: 514-765-7083

You must submit the following documents and information:

  • Proof of approval of the appliance and of the chimney as well as the manufacturer's manual
  • A proposed installation plan showing clearance around the appliance, the chimney connector and the chimney
  • The type of building (single-family, duplex, etc.), a plan of the floor on which the appliance is to be installed and a plan of the upper floors if you want to install a new indoor chimney
  • Breakdown of the assembly of the shaft around the chimney and the height of the chimney over the roof

In the case of the construction or installation of an outdoor chimney, make sure to present a location certificate. If you plan on using an existing chimney, you must indicate the initial use for which it was designed, the composition and diameter of the flue and any other appliances connected to that chimney.
