Permits and certificates
Renovations - Constructions - Doors and windows
A permit must be obtained to replace or to add doors or
windows. Municipal regulations set standards for natural lighting, ventilation,
and safety and, in certain sectors, the appearance of doors and windows.
Adding and expanding
Ensure that any expansion or any addition of a new opening complies with
Civil Code of Québec provisions on minimum distances between the wall on which
the work is to be performed and your property line.
The Civil Code requires that the windows of a building directly facing
another private property building be at least 1.5 m distant from it. The
Building Code also sets certain standards limiting the maximum window sizes, to
help prevent fires from spreading.
Bow windows and window or patio doors
Standards also apply to the installation of bow windows and window or patio
doors. Such standards pertain to the combustibility of the bow windows, the
possibility of fires spreading along glass surfaces and whether a window serves
as an exit.
