Commercial Occupancy - Sidewalk Café on Public or Private Property Occupancy Certificate

You must submit an application for a permit to operate a sidewalk café on public or private property in the borough of Verdun.

A sidewalk café in Verdun

Documents required for your application

  • A scaled layout plan indicating the size of the sidewalk café, its location with respect to the main building, to the street and to any sidewalk obstacles.
  • Information on the kind of railing used, including height, colour, material and design.
  • The applicant's contact information.
  • The full address of the business.
  • A photo of the front of the building visible from the street.

Materials and layout

The railing of the sidewalk café must be made of dark ornamental iron and be secured to the ground with tap cons. The operator must place live flowers around the perimeter of the sidewalk café. Should the café take up the full width of the sidewalk, a wooden sidewalk with an ornamental iron railing will be installed by borough authorities and the cost of permits set accordingly. Under such circumstances, the Urban Planning and Business Services Department must be notified and a deposit of $250 paid for manufacturing the necessary equipment.

If the sidewalk café takes up just part of the sidewalk, a passage of 1.5 metres (5') must be cleared to permit the movement of pedestrians.

Period of operations

Sidewalk cafés can operate on public land from April 15 through October 15. No equipment may be left on site outside of this period.

Information

Businesses that already hold liquor licences can contact the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux du Québec for information concerning the sale of alcohol in sidewalk cafés.
