Authorisation Certificates
Cutting down trees
You must obtain an authorisation certificate before cutting any
tree on your land, no matter what the diameter of its trunk and this in the
following circumstances:
- The tree is dead or is irreversibly ill.
- The tree poses a hazard to public safety.
- The roots of the tree cause damage to the property.
- The tree prevents a construction, a usage of an authorized building,
unless it is a sign or a billboard.
- The tree is a nuisance for the development and growth of neighboring trees
which are part of a grove.
- The tree must be cut down for the execution of public works.
Procedure
Request the authorisation certificat at the Bureau
Accès Verdun, accompanied with the following information:
- Specify the location of any tree to be cut down on your land.
- Give a written report from a professional stating the reason or your
request.
Replacement of a tree
Any tree that is cut down must in any place or another on your land,
other than in the case where the minimal number of required trees is already
reached, in accordance to the Bylaw 1700, as amended, must be replaced.
Tree Policy
Montreal’s executive committee has issued a directive banning the felling of
publicly or privately owned trees other than under exceptional circumstances
until new regulatory provisions that have resulted from the tree policy
coordination process are adopted. The moratorium bans the felling of trees
anywhere in the city.
