Maintenance of Parks and Green Spaces

Workers cleaning a green space

The borough's park workers maintain its parks and green spaces. Starting in the spring they begin:

  • Trimming shrubs
  • Mending lawns
  • Pruning trees
  • Cleaning plant beds
  • Planting flowers
  • Protecting plants against disease

Lawns are mowed by crews that also remove weeds from sidewalks and around trees. The grass is cut about once every 10 days, depending on the climate and the time of summer. Grass grows much more slowly during dry periods.

Pruning

Trees located in front yards are pruned by borough employees if they are situated on the portion of land belonging to the city. One of our representatives will determine the property line. There is no charge for tree pruning, if required. On the other hand, trees in backyard must be pruned at owner expense. No inspection by a borough representative is required.

Felling trees

You must obtain a permit from the Accès Verdun office (4555, rue de Verdun, Suite 102) before felling a tree on your property. A borough representative will visit the site and determine if the tree may be felled and if it is situated on your land or on that of the borough. A fee is charged to review your request, whatever decision is ultimately made. If your request is approved, you will receive the permit in the mail. If not, the Accès Verdun office will contact you to inform you.

Fees: $30, not refundable.
