 | A forward-thinking park
The Complexe environnemental de Saint-Michel, which is based on sustainable development, is a one-of-a-kind park that has won many international environmental awards.Tohu, the circus arts centre, is in charge of activities at the park. TOHU’s mission includes cultural, environmental and community components.
In 1988, the city acquired the former Miron limestone quarry and its adjacent land to create a 192-hectare complex. Part of the complex is home to a recovery centre, where Montrealers’ recyclables are processed, a power station that converts the biogas produced at the landfill site into electricity, and composting sites. The areas where waste was landfilled for more than 30 years are progressively being developed into a large and beautiful park, comparable in size to Mount Royal Park, that will bring together nature, culture, science and sports. Visitors can come and see this transformation.
