Neuf couleurs au vent
(Nine colours in the wind)

The work of art was commissioned as part of the exhibition Vent et eau, held in Québec city in 1984, to commemorate the arrival of Jacques Cartier 450 years earlier. These two natural elements were alternately integrated into the work by Daniel Buren, in 1975, on Lake Wannsee, in Berlin, where nine sails are bent to the masts of nine ships.

The flag arrangement follows the alphabetical progression of the colours, from the centre to the extremities. The colours are identified with the flags: nine flags… nine colours.
