George-Étienne Cartier
(1814-1873)
Cartier was a lawyer and statesman who became involved early on in the Patriotes movement and played an active role in the 1837-1838 uprisings, in particular at the battle of Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu. Upon returning from exile in the United States, he was elected in 1848 as member for Verchères of the Legislative Assembly of United Canada. He served as head of the Conservative Party for 25 years and joint Prime Minister with Sir John Alexander Macdonald from 1858 to 1862, and was one of the Fathers of Confederation.
