The 2008 Transportation Plan proposed 21 projects to reinvent Montréal. Public consultations brought to the fore measures to reduce greenhouse gases and pollution and improve air quality and traffic flow.

Montréal’s transportation plan is intended to provide for the mobility needs of its population and help make the agglomeration a great place to live, a prosperous economic hub and environmentally friendly.

To achieve these goals, Montréal needs to greatly reduce its dependence on the automobile through massive investments in public transit and active mobility. The city is therefore turning toward new ways to get around, like tramways, buses, subways, trains, bicycles and walking. It also wants to encourage more efficient use of automobiles through carpooling, car sharing and taxis.

The Five Objectives

The Transportation Plan includes the following objectives:

  • Create optimal conditions for getting around the city
  • Improve residents’ quality of life
  • Improve the environment
  • Support the vitality of Montréal’s economy
  • Integrate the planning of transportation with that of land use

A new planning exercise is underway to update the guiding principles of this plan.
