Toponymy directory

The term “toponymy” refers to all place names in a region or city. It can also apply to the act of naming public spaces.

There are approximately 6,000 indexed names of streets, squares, parks and other public spaces in the city’s 19 boroughs.

This historical directory of Montréal place names contains information about the origin and history of the names. Only streets that fall under the jurisdiction of Ville de Montréal are indexed in the database.

Each listing contains the name of the street, the date it was named, the borough, a historical note and a list of references.
