Agreement with the Secrétariat à la région métropolitaine

This memorandum of understanding with the Secrétariat à la région métropolitaine came into effect on January 1, 2013, replacing the $140 million agreement with the Ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire (MAMROT) that existed from 2008 to 2012. Under this agreement, an amount of $175 million has been made available to the City to fund the development of large-scale projects and the implementation of the economic development strategy of Montreal.

The funded projects, which must be carried out by the City administration or by non-profit organizations (NPOs), fall within the five areas of activity identified in the Imagining – Building Montréal 2025 strategy:

  • Knowledge, creativity and innovation
  • Culture
  • Living environment
  • Infrastructures
  • Openness and international outreach

Examples of funded cultural projects are:

  • Heritage and public art: Refurbishment of Dorchester Square and Place du Canada, along with restoration of the Cenotaph and of the Sir John A. Macdonald Monument
  • Quartier des spectacles: Lighting plan
  • Implementation of initiatives to develop Montréal festivals, such as the creation of the circus arts festival MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CIRQUE
  • Montreal Museum of Fine Arts: Refurbishment of the public space around the museum: Avenue du Musée
