Agreement with the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles du Québec (MICC)
Each year, the Ville de Montréal welcomes more than 70% of new arrivals to Quebec. Since 1999, the City has signed a series of agreements with the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles (MICC) to facilitate their integration.
The 2011‒2014 Agreement, in particular, specifically addresses the implementation of several cultural initiatives to improve relations with immigrant populations and to provide them with a better living environment. Some groups, in particular women and youth, are especially targeted under this three-year agreement.
With its extensive network of services close to communities across the city, the Bibliothèques de Montréal are a force for the social integration of new arrivals. Several projects have been developed or consolidated with the City’s public libraries. A total of $880,000 has been set aside over three years to fund the following priority projects:
- Liaison officers: Hired in four boroughs, the main duty of these specialized librarians is to collaborate with the community to provide adapted services to new arrivals and immigrants.
- Contact, the Joy of Reading
- Word Games
